Nikon announced today that it is letting loose two new compact cameras a little later this autumn. First up will be the Coolpix P7000, which is due to go on sale on 23 September; followed by the Coolpix S80 on 7 October. Whilst the P7000 is a camera that pitches itself dSLR users who want a smaller alternative, or compact users who aren’t quite ready to make the leap to a dSLR, the S80 is the slim, stylish, touch-screen number. I’ve been poking around the reviews of the Canon PowerShot S95 that was released last week and I have to say that I’m struggling to find anyone who has a bad word to say about it. With a 10 mega-pixel sensor, a 28-105mm f/2-4.9 lens, fully manual and RAW capable shooting, and an HD video mode, Canon has built on the S95’s predecessor (the S90) to provide a pocket-sized picture-making-machine of tactile sleekness and wonder that might appeal to the dSLR user. With three new compact camera releases scheduled for September, and the EX1 hitting the shops a few weeks back, Samsung have enjoyed a busy summer. (I wonder if four camera releases competes with moving house for busy-ness?)
