Well whaddya know, the first topic that Steve Jobs discussed at Apple’s Special Event yesterday, when it came to the iPhone, was HDR photos. With the release of Apple’s iOS update (iOS 4.1) next week comes a new feature for the iPhone camera: HDR.
When you activate the phone’s camera, you’ll see a button on the top of the screen that says ‘HDR’. If you select this feature, the camera will take a normal ‘raw’ photo as well as an HDR image. Both will be saved to the iPhone’s camera roll. Continue Reading

Welcome to the world, Canon EOS 60D! (Well, almost, it goes on sale in September. But unlike Florence Rose Endellion Cameron, I doubt it’ll be premature.) This is the snazzy replacement for the 50D stalwart. So, what does it have to offer and is it as amazing as we might like to think? Continue Reading

With Toy Story 3 earning just shy of £40million during the first two weeks of its release, geeks still reeling from the beauty of Avatar, and all of Hollywood being a-flutter about 3D, you’d almost think there’s some sort of trend going on, or something.
It’s not just in the cinemas the revolution is raging: Sky is announcing the arrival of a new 3D channel later this year. It seems 3D has taken over our cinemas and is now making its way into our living rooms. Continue Reading

The cameras that we use today, the ones that we think of as digital. They’re not quite as digital as they wish they were.
Oh, they’re cameras, yes, definitely, they paint pictures with light and everything, but they’re not digital. Our ‘digital cameras’ so far have been film cameras that have been adapted for digital sensors. One expert claims that the real world of digital photography awaits.
In the next five years, we’ll see f/0.5 lenses, digital zoom that’s better than its optical equivalents, extremely high sensitivity sensors, and ludicrously high dynamic range.
Ladies and gentlemen… we present the revolution of the digital camera… Continue Reading

Use a Sony dSLR? Fancy splashing out on some new glass? Sony have just announced that three fantastic new prime lenses will be available for European shoppers this autumn. (Sorry USians – Sony hasn’t given any release details for the other side of the pond.) What’s more: two of these babies are part of what Sony has called its ‘Easy Choice’ range, so they won’t be breaking the bank. Continue Reading

We like being up-to-date. Mostly it seems to help things run smoothly. (Except my iPhone 3G didn’t like being updated to iOS4. Anyone else suffer with that, too? Sorry. I’ve digressed.) Anyway, yes, updates. If you use a Pentax K-7 you should probably toddle over to the grand repository of Pentax firmware updates and get for yourself version 1.10. Continue Reading

So you think your camera isn’t good enough? You’re probably wrong. No, seriously – you’re about as wrong as you can possibly be. I know I keep droning on about this, but here’s the proof, once and for all.
The awesome guys over at Fstoppers.com have done a video showing off how they were able to do a photo shoot with the worst camera they could think of. Continue Reading

I’ve done a lot of thinking recently, about what’s next for photography.
Think about it – while the manufacturers launch new cameras every couple of months, there hasn’t been a single fundamental change in the art of photography since the mid-1960s, when through-the-lens lightmetering on SLR cameras meant that you didn’t have to have a separate light meter anymore.
So, I wonder, what’s next? Continue Reading
